Tipp

Choose a German course that interests you and suits your German language skills.

Providers of German Courses

Adult education centres (Volkshochschulen, VHS)

Adult education centres (VHS) are public institutions. They offer educational courses for adults, including courses in German as a foreign language. The costs for most courses are not very high. After completing a German course, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

There are several adult education centres in the FrankfurtRheinMain region. You can use the VHS course finder to search for VHS German courses in your area. You can also find the locations of adult education centres in the FrankfurtRheinMain region on our map.

Adult education centres also offer free online German courses. This is helpful if you want to learn German independently at home. This means you can start learning before you come to Germany.

Goethe-Institut

The Goethe-Institut is a cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with locations worldwide. There you can learn German and also take German exams.

The Goethe-Institut in Frankfurt offers a wide range of German courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced. Not sure which level is right for you? The Goethe-Institut offers a free online placement test to help you assess your language level.

The Goethe-Institut also offers online German courses – with or without a teacher for independent learning.

Private Language Schools

In addition to adult education centres and the Goethe-Institut, there are other providers of language courses, primarily private language schools. The cost of courses at private language schools is often higher. It is also advisable to carefully examine and compare the content and services offered by language courses.

Tipp

Choose a course that will award you an officially recognised language certificate upon successful completion. Such courses are based on the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Ask the course provider to confirm this!

German Exams with officially recognised Language Certificates

The Goethe-Institut also offers German exams and German courses to prepare for exams. After successful completion, you will receive a language certificate that is internationally recognised as proof of qualification.

Tipp

A certificate of attendance for a language course is often not sufficient as proof of language proficiency. If you need official proof of your German language skills, you can take a German exam at a Goethe-Institut near you

The language certificates issued by the language testing provider telc. are also internationally recognised. Here you will find various language exams, depending on what you need a language certificate for (e.g., for an entry visa). In Germany, telc. also cooperates with the federal government for the language exam at the end of integration courses.

Telc. language certificates are also recognised for spouses joining their partners in Germany. There are over 3,000 TELC examination centres worldwide where you can take the language examinations. You can find an examination centre near you, including in FrankfurtRheinMain, here

Further helpful information on German examinations can be found on the Deutsche Welle website.

German Courses for Work

The language used in everyday life differs from the language used in the workplace. In addition to general German courses, there are special German courses for work. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) offers a wide range of work-related German courses to support integration into the labour market.

The federal government funds these courses if certain conditions are met. You need a participation authorisation to take part. Further information on work-related language courses can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.

Various local course providers, such as adult education centres, run work-related language courses. You can find suitable work-related language courses in FrankfurtRheinMain using the course search function on the Federal Employment Agency's website

German Courses for Children and Juveniles

Children and young people need to speak German so they can make friends and understand everything in school lessons. For children and young people who come to Germany during their school years, there are special support or language learning classes.

Only afterwards do they transfer to regular school lessons. Language tests are carried out to determine what support a child needs. Further information on this can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees or at the school authority.

Young people who are no longer of school age and young adults up to the age of 27 can learn German in a youth integration course.
