There are state and private universities in FrankfurtRheinMain:

• State universities such as Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt Technical University, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Justus Liebig University Giessen offer a wide range of degree programmes. From humanities and social sciences to natural sciences, engineering and economics. The focus of a state university is on scientific theory and research. 
• State higher education colleges such as Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Fulda University of Applied Sciences focus on practical training. Higher education colleges usually offer closer contact with industry and also collaborate with companies. The course content is more geared towards practical application in professional life and often includes compulsory practical phases or internships.
