The cities with the largest populations are Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Mainz and Wiesbaden. In addition, there are many attractive medium-sized and smaller towns in the 18 districts of the metropolitan region.

Almost 50% of Germans live in rented accommodation. It is worth looking outside the major cities, as rents are usually slightly cheaper there. And thanks to the short distances in the region and the good infrastructure, you can commute quickly and easily from one place to another. Tips on finding accommodation can be found here. All the important information you need to rent a flat can be found here.

In addition to traditional flats, which singles, couples or families mostly occupy, there are also completely different types of housing, especially in larger cities and student cities such as Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Mainz and Wiesbaden:

Apartment for temporary rent

You can rent a furnished apartment for a relatively short period of time. The rental period is determined in advance. In addition to the rent, a deposit is usually required for the use of the furniture.

Shared flat (WG)

Many young professionals and students in Germany live in shared flats. Here, several people share an apartment and the rent. You have your own room, but share the kitchen and bathroom. This is inexpensive and makes it easier for you to socialise and learn German in everyday life. You can find vacant rooms in shared flats online on flat-sharing websites.

Student halls of residence (only for students)

Students can rent a room in a student hall of residence. The rooms are usually furnished and slightly cheaper. To do this, you must apply early through the relevant student services organisation at your university.

Rental Prices

As is the case almost everywhere in the world, rental prices in cities in the FRM region have risen in recent years. However, compared with other major cities, prices here remain moderate. You can find a current overview of local rental prices in the rental price index

Housing Subsidies

In Germany, various housing subsidy options are available to support people on low incomes. These include housing benefit and the housing eligibility certificate. Housing benefit is a financial subsidy towards your rent. To receive this, you must submit an application to your local housing benefit office, which will then be reviewed.

The housing eligibility certificate gives you access to cheaper, subsidised flats. You must submit your application to your local housing office. Whether you meet the requirements usually depends on factors such as income, household size and rent.
