In addition to trips into nature, the region offers many other family activities and excursion destinations. We briefly present some special destinations on this page. Further ideas and information can be found on the FrankfurtRheinMain Tourism website.

Animal Parks and Zoos

In addition to several smaller animal parks, there are three large zoos in FRM. Frankfurt Zoo is located in the middle of the city. Throughout the year, you can see over 500 animal species from all over the world and learn about the animals and their conservation.

In Kronberg im Taunus, the Opel Zoo is home to more than 200 species living in spacious enclosures. The Opel Zoo is particularly well known for its elephants, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and wildebeests. Otherwise, there is fun for the whole day thanks to the adventure playground and interactive stations.

In Darmstadt, the Vivarium awaits your visit – a zoo that specialises primarily in species conservation and the breeding of amphibians, reptiles and fish. But you and your kids can also see various species of monkeys up close here.

Journey Back in Time

If you like, you can also take your children on a journey back in time:

The Saalburg in the Taunus is an old Roman fort that was rebuilt over 100 years ago. At the exhibition site, you can admire excavated artefacts and learn how the Roman border was defended from the Saalburg. Exciting guided tours and activities such as javelin throwing and archery bring Roman times back to life.

At Hessenpark, you and your children can experience how people used to live and work in Germany. Over 100 original houses have been built in this open-air museum. Demonstrations and events showcase the crafts and agriculture of the time, featuring authentic costumes. You can round off your visit with some shopping in the market square.

In the Celtic World at Glauberg, you and your children can take a fascinating journey back to the time of the Celts. The modern museum displays impressive finds from a Celtic princely tomb. An exciting exhibition, interactive stations and the archaeological open-air site bring history to life and make it tangible.
